How do you get back on the slopes after an injury?

In skiing or snowboarding, an accident or injury - a fracture, sprain or strain - can force you to take an unexpected break

Often a dreaded moment, a return to the slopes needs to be properly prepared so that you can regain your self-confidence and limit the risk of another injury.

From getting back into shape, to a progressive resumption, and lessons supervised by an experienced instructor, we give you the best advice for getting back out on the powder, and doing it safely!

Take it easy and listen to your needs and desires

Can't wait to get back on your skis? After an injury, there's only one rule: take your time! Rushing or overdoing it could slow down your recovery.

While there's no ideal time to get back into sport after an injury, it's a good idea to listen to your body. Assess your pain, your ability to resume physical exercise and, if in doubt, seek medical advice.

Once you're on the slopes, again, don't push yourself: start with easy runs and keep your sessions short so as not to strain your muscles and joints, and if you feel the slightest pain, remember to take a break.

Muscle strengthening: an essential physical preparation for your return to the slopes

When you stop doing sport, your body naturally loses flexibility and strength. Skiing or snowboarding can be particularly tiring.

Adopting a good warm-up routine and exercising your muscles when you return to your favourite sport will help you to be well prepared for the exertion and thus limit the risk of a new injury.

To do so, you can progressively opt for cardio or strengthening exercises that target the parts of the body that are most in demand when skiing, such as the calves and thighs. Before hitting the slopes, it's also a good idea to do dynamic warm-ups to help stimulate your blood circulation, and include a few flexibility exercises.

Depending on the type of injury, you can also get support equipment such as a splint or orthosis to keep your joint properly supported and prevent recurrence.
